Community News March Issue

grow-veggies

Welcome to all our subscribers including those of you who've joined us recently.

We've got a full calendar of green living events throughout the month - there's a smorgasbord to choose from including the Montville Sustainability Fair, Biochar & Bamboo Workshop, Edible Herbs & Weeds Workshop and series of Sustainable Homes Workshops at Sunshine Coast libraries. Many of the events are free so book in quickly to avoid disappointment.

As autumn has arrived and we're hoping for some cooler weather, it's time to think about planting out winter crops - you'll find some tips on what to plant in our Recommended Articles.

Highlights this month:

Margaret_headshot

  • NEW! Inspiring Story - We are thrilled to share Margaret's story about a well designed urban space with loads of practical features packed into a courtyard garden. Her clever application of permaculture principles, use of vertical structures; espaliered fruit trees; propagating; and repurposed materials shows it's possible to live sustainably on a tight budget. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.
  • NEW! The Green Blog - We've added a new feature to facilitate local conversations and share articles from our own team plus contributing writers, so check out the first post and contact us if you're interested in joining our Guest Bloggers (Remember to subscribe to new posts while you're there).
  • NEW! Your Green Footprint - Clean Up our Environment - We're all concerned about keeping our own home clean and tidy but what about the environment more generally? Clean Up Australia Day events are on Sunday, 4 March, so we've featured some activities you can get involved in to make a positive contribution locally - not just on this date but throughout the year.
  • Check Out our Home Page where you'll find a selection of articles and news on our website.

  • We've Featured 2 New Videos this month but have added several more to our library:
    • In Wicking Beds, you'll learn how to create a simple self-watering garden bed - a closed system to save you both time and money while you grow your veggies.

    • There's No Tomorrow is an animated documentary that gives an easy to understand overview about resource depletion and the impossibility of infinite growth on a finite planet.

  • green-calendarOur What's On calendar is packed with a comprehensive list of sustainable living events - updated daily. You'll find all the upcoming events in 16 categories (including two new ones). See all March events at a glance. Check it regularly to pick up a new skill with one of the workshops on offer and support some of the fantastic local food and environment events in our region.

We volunteer our time to add 1,000+ community events every year as a free service - Please share the Green Journey calendar on your social networks and tell your friends. We always appreciate support through donations and our online shop.

Gardens looking for Gardeners

Are you a community garden, a garden nursery or an environmental group looking for volunteers? If so, then this is the place for you. You can register your details in the "Become Involved" section of this website, and we will write a post about it, then highlight it on the site. We will also be doing a lot of promotion of the website to attract interested gardeners to view it. We want as many people gardening in the Moreton Bay Council area as possible! So please send us your details and become involved!

Are you a keen gardener looking for a garden? Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre has produced a directory for volunteers looking for volunteering opportunities in the Moreton Bay Council area. Volunteering for environmental projects, including community gardens, is one of the areas highlighted in the guide.

The guide can be downloaded from the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre website at www.prnc.org.au, but a summary is given here.

Several organisations have ongoing garden, nursery and environmental projects. They include:

  • Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association
  • Bushcare
  • Caboolture Regional Environmental Centre (CREEC)
  • Friends of CREEC
  • Friends of Redcliffe Botanic Gardens
  • Grow, Cook, Eat - Kurwongba
  • Kumbartcho Sanctuary
  • Osprey House
  • Pine Rivers Catchment Association

Not listed, but also worth approaching are:

  • Redcliffe Community Association Garden
  • Sandgate PCYC community garden

It is always worth checking with local churches and schools as well, as they are often contemplating gardens, but need volunteers to get started.

You may also like to view the section of our website, called "Get Involved". This has a link to community gardens in the Moreton Bay Council area.
