Are you a keen gardener looking for a garden? Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre has produced a directory for volunteers looking for volunteering opportunities in the Moreton Bay Council area. Volunteering for environmental projects, including community gardens, is one of the areas highlighted in the guide.

The guide can be downloaded from the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre website at www.prnc.org.au, but a summary is given here.

Several organisations have ongoing garden, nursery and environmental projects. They include:

  • Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association
  • Bushcare
  • Caboolture Regional Environmental Centre (CREEC)
  • Friends of CREEC
  • Friends of Redcliffe Botanic Gardens
  • Grow, Cook, Eat - Kurwongba
  • Kumbartcho Sanctuary
  • Osprey House
  • Pine Rivers Catchment Association

Not listed, but also worth approaching are:

  • Redcliffe Community Association Garden
  • Sandgate PCYC community garden

It is always worth checking with local churches and schools as well, as they are often contemplating gardens, but need volunteers to get started.

You may also like to view the section of our website, called "Get Involved". This has a link to community gardens in the Moreton Bay Council area.

Edible Landscapes hosted 4 full day workshops in various locations throughout the Moreton Bay Region in December 2011.

With over 35 people attending each workshop the program has been hailed a success.

Thanks to the great support from Moreton Bay Council and Qld Health, a large group of the community are now beginning the journey of creating a sustainable food production garden in their homes, at community groups or have started negotiations with Council for some land.

The workshops included hands on activities on composting, garden design, soils, no-dig gardening, planting seedlings, testing soils, plus lots of other fun activities.

The workshops were designed to be fun and engaging and although it was a long day most participants went away full of energy and enthusiasm.

If you attended the workshops, please share your new found knowledge with others in the Moreton Bay Region.
