Local Food Systems

Growing and buying local food makes a difference!

potato_harvest

When you sit down to dinner, do you know where your meal has come from? Do you know where the ingredients were grown and how far they travelled to be on your plate? It might amaze you to calculate how far each and every food product may have travelled around Australia or the globe.

With food for an average family BBQ travelling approximately 190,000km from source to table, it is important to think locally to reduce the environmental impact of transporting produce. Most people are surprised to find out that their everyday food contributes so much to greenhouse gases - up to 30% of a household's carbon emissions.

The simple act of growing or buying local produce means that our everyday choices can help to reduce the carbon emissions from food miles - the distance that food has travelled from source to table. It also means that you get to enjoy the freshest and most nutritious seasonal produce available.

Refer to the list below to find out how you can buy locally through farmers markets, box systems and food cooperatives...

BOX SYSTEMS

Food Connect

Food Connect is leading the way in responsible food production and distribution in Australia. Unlike most food distributors, major supermarkets and box schemes, Food Connect sources its predominately organic produce from local and regional family farms. They provide family farmers a fair price for their produce, which encourages them to continue growing our food. This, in turn, helps our region to be more food secure. Furthermore, the environmental benefits of eating Food Connect produce go beyond just eating organic by ensuring a significant reduction in the carbon emission that are associated with transporting food long distances.

Food Connect provides a range of fruit and vegetables in different sized boxes to suit your needs. They also have a growing number of extra products for purchase including organic coffee, milk, cheese, eggs, tofu, soy milk, honey, peanut butter, avocado oil and sauces.

Each week your produce os delivered to a local 'city cousin' - a family or community organisation in your community (or near your work) that volunteers their time and space to help Food Connect get your delicious fruit and vegetables to you.

There are a number of 'city cousins' across the Moreton Bay region, please contact Food Connect for further information.
